Charles Splady

Born in 1949, Charles D. Splady is an American sculptor whose work explores the enduring cycle of metal and its transformation across time. Drawing on generations of craft, his sculptures evoke ancient tools, symbolic forms, and imagined devices—each piece a meditation on memory, process, and material.

Splady studied at the University of Wisconsin and graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1971. That same year, he founded Splady Art Studios in Oakland, CA—an all-inclusive metal art studio specializing in sculpture, architectural metalwork, and design.

Rooted in a deep respect for the history of making, Splady approaches metal as a living medium—melted, reformed, and recast across centuries. His practice reflects not just technical mastery, but a philosophical connection to the universal language of form.
